Calibration

Gearbox Tuning

Your transmission has its own control unit, and it is calibrated just as conservatively as the engine. Gearbox tuning sharpens shift speed and behaviour, and raises torque limits so a tuned engine is not held back.

  • Faster, crisper shifts
  • Raised torque limits
  • Full manual mode & launch control
Overview

What is gearbox tuning?

Modern automatic and dual-clutch gearboxes are controlled by a Transmission Control Unit (TCU). From the factory it is set up for comfort and to protect the gearbox from every possible driver, which can mean slow shifts, early upshifts and torque limits that cap a tuned engine.

A TCU calibration, sometimes called a DSG remap, refines how and when the gearbox shifts, how firmly the clutches engage and how much torque the gearbox will accept. It pairs naturally with an engine remap, so the whole drivetrain works as one.

Benefits

What you can expect.

01

Quicker shift speeds

Faster, more decisive changes, especially in sport modes and under load.

02

Raised torque limits

Lets the gearbox accept the extra torque from a Stage 1 or Stage 2 engine calibration.

03

Full manual mode

The gearbox holds your chosen gear rather than changing up for you at the limiter.

04

Launch control

Consistent, repeatable launches where the transmission supports it.

05

Refined everyday behaviour

Smarter shift points and kickdown, so the car feels more alert without losing comfort around town.

06

Reversible

As with every calibration we write, your original TCU software is saved.

Which gearboxes can be tuned?

We tune a wide range of dual-clutch and automatic transmissions, including VW Group DSG and S tronic gearboxes and BMW TCU applications. Availability and features vary by gearbox and model year, so tell us what you drive and we will confirm exactly what is possible.

Gearbox and engine together

On many tuned cars the gearbox is the limiting factor. Combining TCU tuning with a Stage 1 or Stage 2 remap means the extra torque is delivered cleanly, with shifts that suit the new power. It is usually most cost-effective when booked at the same visit.

How we work

A considered process, from first call to handover.

  1. 01

    Consultation

We talk through the car, how you use it and what you want from it, then recommend only what is worthwhile.

  2. 02

    Health check

Diagnostics before any change, so we know the car is healthy and fit for the work.

  3. 03

    Bespoke calibration

Software and parts matched to your specific vehicle, never a generic off-the-shelf solution.

  4. 04

    Verification & handover

Post-work checks, then we walk you through what was done. Your original software is kept on file.

I had my Audi A1 remapped by Callum recently and the difference is amazing. Better acceleration, more torque and now averaging almost 60mpg on a long run, 45–50mpg around town. Throttle and turbo response so much better.

Used Pro Tuning as my Peugeot had an AdBlue problem. Turned up on time which is great! Sorted it out! Then an issue with the family Range Rover: new battery fitted and coded. Very reasonable and spot on service, thanks! Will use again and recommend!

Callum is an absolute car software wizard! I was in a fairly desperate situation with my VW Passat and after an hour in the hands of Pro Tuning it was completely sorted. The workshop is impressive, as clean as a main dealership, and all aspects of the service is professional. It’s not cheap, but then he competes on outcomes, not price, and my outcome was a fully working car again.

FAQs

Gearbox Tuning: your questions answered.

Do I need gearbox tuning if I remap my engine?

Not always, but many dual-clutch and automatic gearboxes have torque limits that cap a tuned engine. We will tell you whether yours does.

Which features can you add?

Depending on the transmission: faster shifts, raised torque limits, full manual mode, revised shift points and launch control. We will confirm exactly what your gearbox supports.

Will it make the car uncomfortable to drive?

No. Comfort modes remain smooth; the sharper behaviour is concentrated in sport and manual modes.

Can it be reversed?

Yes. Your original TCU software is saved before any change.

How long does it take?

Gearbox tuning is usually completed in the same visit as an engine remap. We will confirm timings when you book.
